Comfort Tip #2: A Simple Way To Reduce Pressure From a Tight Underwear Waistband

Comfort Tip #2: A Simple Way To Reduce Pressure From a Tight Underwear Waistband

Durch Jack Wright

A comfortable day often starts with comfortable underwear.

Because it’s the first thing you put on and the last thing you take off, an uncomfortable waistband can become something you feel all day long.

For people with IBS, bloating, or waist sensitivity, even a small amount of constant pressure can become distracting.

Fortunately, there’s a simple trick that some people have been using for years.

Comfort Tip #2: Loosen the Elastic—Don’t Remove It

Some people carefully make small relief cuts in the elastic waistband of their underwear.

The goal isn’t to remove the elastic.

It’s simply to weaken it enough that it stretches a little more easily and applies less pressure around your waist.

A common method is:

  • Make a small vertical cut through the elastic waistband.
  • Stop when you reach the stitching that attaches the waistband to the underwear.
  • Do not cut through the stitching or completely separate the elastic.

Many people find one cut on each side provides enough relief.

If the waistband is especially tight, some also add a third cut in the center front.

Small changes can make a surprisingly noticeable difference.

Why This Helps

Elastic waistbands are designed to maintain constant tension.

By slightly weakening the elastic, the waistband can stretch more easily instead of constantly squeezing your waist.

The underwear still stays in place, but with less pressure throughout the day.

For many people, that’s enough to make sitting, driving, or simply getting through the day more comfortable.

A Better Long-Term Approach

This trick can be an effective workaround for underwear you already own.

But if you find yourself making these cuts in pair after pair, it may be a sign that the waistband itself isn’t working for your body.

Instead of modifying every new pair, consider underwear with an adjustable waistband that lets you control the fit whenever you need to—without permanently altering the garment.

Try a better waistband
